Poronui Lodge sits in the Taharua Valley, a 35-minute drive north from from Taupo through exotic forest plantations. The sporting property encompasses 16,000 acres of farmland, forest, mist-wreathed uplands and the trout-infested Taharua River. This is a world-class fly fishing destination and we have not seen better guides anywhere. It you want to fish for trout, this is the place to come.
Nestled in the secluded Taharua valley on New Zealand’s spectacular North Island, the luxury wilderness lodge is preferred by the world’s most discerning anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. The 16,000 acre property, possibly the best fishing lodge New Zealand has to offer, has been a favored fishing ground for ancient Maori tribes and for its English settlers since 1877. This trip is provided by High Adventure Company
October 1 is the opening of the fishing season and means the resident trout have been undisturbed for months. Temperatures are still cool, but with longer days the browns and rainbows become very active, and there is excellent fishing with weighted nymphs in most mountain streams. Early summer, from November to December, is undoubtedly the best time to fly fish. While the weather is warm, the water is still cool. There can be good mayfly hatches, encouraging the trout to feed recklessly on the surface during the day. This is the least crowded time to fly fish in New Zealand. Mid summer, from January through February, is traditionally the most popular time for anglers to visit New Zealand. Streams are low and trout are highly visible in the water, but they can be selective with their feeding so these conditions demand careful stalking. March and April are great months to combine fishing with hunting, while the focus for fly fishing in May and June is in the back country rivers and the tributary streams flowing into Lake Taupo.
No matter what the season, Poronui can offer you a truly memorable experience. The ultimate fly fishing experience is being surrounded by spectacular scenery and casting a dry fly over a big, wild trout in a crystal clear stream. From four-wheel drive to helicopter fly out, there are many ways to experience fly fishing at Poronui. They can also arrange lake fishing by private charter boat on Lake Taupo.
To match the premier quality of the outdoor experience, Poronui offers three supremely comfortable accommodation options: the legendary lodge, luxury camping down by the Mohaka river at Safari Camp, or stately Blake House – the choice of celebrities, captains of industry and royalty.
American anglers arrive into Auckland International Airport after flying from Los Angeles or San Francisco. Air New Zealand provides direct flights whereas other options, such as Quantas, are routed through Australia, adding three hours or more to the journey. From Auckland, the flight to Taupo, where you will be met by a Poronui representative, is only 35 minutes. It is then a further 35-minute drive to reach Poronui. Flights leaving Los Angeles on Saturday evening arrive in New Zealand early Monday morning with the connecting flight getting them to the lodge by 9.30am. On the way home, remember that you arrive back in the USA on the same day that you leave Auckland!
