If big trophy trout is what you’re after, fly fishing on the Grey Reef in Alcova, Wyoming is the place to be. Established in 1998, North Platte Lodge has specialized in Wyoming fly fishing vacations for nearly two decades. Miles of exclusive river access, full outfitters services and its renowned The Reef Fly Shop compliment clean, comfortable, spacious rooms. Come meet gracious hosts, fish with top-shelf guides, and experience front-door access to some of the best public and private trout waters in the west.
Al North Platte Lodge and The Reef Fly Shop guides are CPR/First Aid certified and have their own drift boats. Each boat accommodates two anglers and the guide. Fishing can be done from the comfort of the boat. But, to get the full experience, step out and wade when opportunities arise. All boats and gear are kept clean and orderly for your comfort.
From North Platte Lodge, begin your fishing day on the Grey Reef stretch of the North Platte River, a four-season fishery with healthy populations of wild brown and rainbow trout. The mellow and meandering Reef rolls through wide-open country and averages approximately 3,000 trout per mile: 90 percent rainbow and 10 percent browns and Snake River cutts.
Your typical Wyoming fly fishing day with North Platte Lodge starts with coffee, juices, and a hot (or cold) breakfast in the dining room. Fly fishing guides (prearranged) will meet guests at the lodge – with lunches, cold beverages and gear items – and shuttle anglers to the river. Day floats on the Reef range from 4 to 10 miles long. Lunch is served on the water and fishing is concentrated on the stretches that are producing best during your chosen timeframe.
The changing of the seasons brings about fantastic changes to our wildlife and surroundings. North Platte Lodge specializes in trout fishing opportunities across three zones: The Miracle Mile, Fremont Canyon and Grey Reef.
Alcova, Pathfinder and Grey Reef Reservoirs are also frequented by experienced guides. Due to the lodge’s prime location, these big-fish waters are all yours to explore all-year round.
Expect to catch and release a number of spectacular trout. Boating 20 or more fish isn’t uncommon.
Grey Reef is a big trout powerhouse. Many of those fish will push the 18+ inch mark. Rainbows average 16 to 18 inches long, while trophies span 25 to 30 inches and can weigh 10+ pounds.
And keep this in mind: On the Grey Reef, more 20+ inch trophies are caught daily than most rivers in the country. If it’s wild, big-shouldered rainbow and brown trout you’re after, North Platte Lodge is your ticket to those once-in-a-lifetime fish.
Thanks to consistent tailwater flows carrying scuds, leeches, worms, and massive terrestrial and macroinvertebrate life, brown trout are equally large, oftentimes more elusive, and are fiendish for big stripped streamers.
Miles of private access give you first crack at the Grey Reef’s best runs. The drift-boat fishing we specialize in is primarily a subsurface game with nymphs and streamers. But dry-fly opportunities exist. During season baetis, PMD, Yellow Sally, caddis, trico, midge and hopper “hatches”, it can be exceptional.
Comfort, quality service, and prime access to exceptional fishing are crucial benchmarks when it comes to choosing Wyoming fly fishing lodges. North Platte Lodge excels on all fronts. For starters, it’s the only full-service outfitter and resort located on the renowned Upper Gray Reef fishery and thus enjoys an unmatched quantity of private access held exclusively for guests. Step out from one of six spacious, well-appointed rooms, gear up at The Reef Fly Shop, and within minutes you’ll be exploring the diverse trophy-trout hoe waters.
There are six spacious guest rooms (four garden level, two main level), each with two queen beds and private bathrooms. Upstairs, a bed and breakfast atmosphere is amplified by a common dining area, cozy living room, and a commercial kitchen equipped with all the contemporary amenities.
Enjoy a hearty breakfast with friends and fellow fly fishers. Lunch is served on the river. And after a satiating fishing day save room for a Wyoming-sized family-style dinner. A wader room for wet-storage includes individual lockers. And unlike other fly fishing lodges, The Reef Fly Shop located next door ensures you’ll find essential gear, a massive selection of flies, exclusive BuffTrout logo apparel, and the top-tier guides for one-of-a-kind Wyoming fly fishing vactions.
