The new lightweight field pants from Gordy & Sons, Outfitters, in Houston, may be the coolest hunting pants you’ll ever wear—and I don’t mean just fashion-wise. Designed for hardcore upland hunters—especially in warmer weather—the breathable blend of polyester and spandex weighs a mere 16 oz, fits as comfortably as a pair of well-worn chinos and seems to move with you perfectly through tall grass and brush.
According to Gordy’s general manager, Mike Burnett, who headed up the design process for this first piece in a planned line of private-label field clothing, the initiative came from company founder Russell Gordy. According to Burnett: “Early on Mr. Gordy said, ‘You know, nobody makes a lightweight pair of brush pants . . . . We need to make some.’” Early prototypes “got rave reviews” from Gordy and others who served as field testers.
The soft, stretchy main fabric is moisture-wicking, anti-microbial and reasonably wrinkle-free, which Burnett said helped meet the objective for pants that would hold up well for several days in the field without washing. A buttoned flap behind the fly helps the waist keep its shape, while a gusseted crotch and articulated knees offer room for comfort and a cut that fits correctly.
The facing at the front and cuffs is a slightly different and heavier fabric with a smoother hand, but even where the pants are double-layered they don’t feel bulky. Triple stitching is featured throughout, and the orange thread punctuates the two-color contrast of the pants and facing material. Facing portions are backed with heavy-duty internal waffle stitching with Kevlar-reinforced thread.
The pants feature two front pockets with lightweight mesh, two rear pockets and a knife pocket. Smooth rivets reinforce the corners of the pockets, and the waist fastener is an unobtrusive, smooth-faced snap.
Burnett said that the pants have proved popular with customers, with more than 300 pairs being sold in the first two months. At $130, they offer a lot of value for money—one of the goals for the company’s private-label field wear. A shooting shirt of similar materials and features is in the works.
Gordy & Sons Ladies Field Pants are available in waist sizes from 0 to 24. Colors are olive and an earth tone that mimics the color of the dirt on Russell Gordy’s Texas ranch.
Pants come unhemmed.
